The Messerschmidt heads are large scale canvases using handmade oil paintsticks. The images become more frenzied over the series and deal with the clinical notion of tell tale signs of artistic madness through analysis of imagery, hence the use of Messerschmidt, an 18th century artist whose work had almost entirely been forgotten until psychiatrists used his work in the 20th century as an example of the “mad” artist. In front of each canvas is a welded metal structure which projects boldly into the viewer’s space, like lines of force emanating from the work.
